Domestic Partnership
A domestic partnership is a way for same sex couples as well as opposite sex couples who choose not to get married to receive some of the same benefits that married couples do. Because Texas does not recognize any form of marriage between same sex partners, domestic partnership is the main alternative to marriage for same sex couples.
Domestic partnerships can add a certain degree of stability to long term relationships. To find out more about domestic partnerships, contact the Conroe divorce lawyers of Garg & Associates, P.C. at 281-362-2865.
Benefits of Domestic Partnership
The benefits of domestic partnership greatly depend on the state that it is applied for in. For instance, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and California basically offer all of the same rights and privileges of marriage to domestic partners.
In Texas, the extent that domestic partnerships can offer similar protections to marriage was greatly crippled by the passing of the 2005 Texas Marriage Amendment which prohibited any branch of the government from offering benefits to partners of the same sex couples. But there are still a number of benefits, even in Texas, that come with domestic partnerships especially in the areas of:
- Property–domestic partnerships recognize the contribution of one partner to the property of the other
- Property ownership
- Support obligations
Even in a state that does not offer a great deal of support for same-sex unions, filing for a domestic partnership can be very important.
