The benefits of domestic partnership greatly depend on the state that it is applied for in. For instance, Oregon, Washington, Nevada and California basically offer all of the same rights and privileges of marriage to domestic partners.
In Texas, the extent that domestic partnerships can offer similar protections to marriage was greatly crippled by the passing of the 2005 Texas Marriage Amendment which prohibited any branch of the government from offering benefits to partners of the same sex couples.
