Caretaker brutually beats 10 year-old over Cheetos

Posted on November 7th, 2012 No Comments

The 23 year-old caretaker of a ten year-old girl has been charged with injury to a child after the young girl told investigators she was beaten with an extension cord, had her hair pulled, and head hit against the floor. The Houston Chronicle says the violence started when the girl returned from a neighbor’s house with a bag of Cheetos.

She recalls that when her caretaker, who had been her guardian since 2006 when her mother was deported to Honduras, saw her eating the snack, the woman became very angry and started hitting her. The girl then says she passed out after the woman banged her head on the floor.

The ten year-old came forward after a school district police officer noticed bruises on her legs and took her to Child Protective Services. Her caretaker later admitted to kicking the girl while she lay on the floor, but denies any wrongdoing.

Equally dividing housework may lead to divorce, study says

Posted on October 5th, 2012 No Comments

Norwegian researchers recently released the results of a study they conducted regarding the correlation between household chores and the overall divorce rate.

The results indicated that marriages in which the husband and wife equally split the responsibility of household chores ended in divorce at a higher rate than couples where the wife was responsible for the majority of the work at home. An analysis of the results also showed that women were more inclined to be responsible for the chores on a regular basis.

Researchers believe that the differences in values and morals may be a large reason behind the results of this study. Marriages in which wives perform most of the household chores may be comprised of older individuals, and therefore they may possess more traditional views on marriage and divorce.

Victims of mistaken paternity still required to pay child support

Posted on September 6th, 2012 No Comments

In the state of Texas, men paying child support to children they later discovered are not theirs are still required to continue paying child support. KHOU reports that about 128,000 men statewide are paying child support to someone else’s child.

Child support is still owed by the victims of mistaken paternity because the state considers it to be in the child’s best interest. While a new law has been passed that allows men to petition for DNA testing that would relieve them of payment, only men who have discovered the child’s mistaken paternity in the past year are eligible.

However, men who are absolved from paying child support must still pay any back child support owed. Texas has collected $3.2 billion in child support payments this fiscal year.
