New divorce study released

According to a recently published 25-year study, women who account for the majority income in their families are 40 percent more likely to get a divorce than those who do not account for a large share of the income.

Western Washington University Sociologist Jay Teachman says that access to money is one factor that makes it easier for these women to divorce their husbands, although bruised male egos also play a part in this trend.

The study, published in the October issue of the Journal of Family Issues, found that when the wife earned at least 60 percent of the family’s income, the likelihood of divorce was 38 percent higher.

It didn’t matter how rich or poor the pair was; the trend was percentage based. Many of the 2,500 women who participated in the study were of the generation (married between 1979-2002) who expected men to be the “breadwinners.”

“When marriages form, there’s expectations,” Teachman said. “So, if you get new information about the relationship, you’re likely to think, ‘This isn’t what I bargained for.’

“There’s some wounded egos, too. The man is going to expect he’ll make more money, and the wife is going to expect she’s not.

Women who bring it a larger portion of the family’s income may resent a man who doesn’t seem to be pulling his weight — “or suddenly decides to spend all his time making model planes,” Teachman said.

Teachman has stated that he was surprised that a woman’s earnings had such a strong effect on the divorce rate.

“I would like to do it again in 10 years with younger women, because it’s a different generation,” he said. “The group of women [in the study] are the last generation, who may not have expected to have the careers they ended up having.”
