HPD officers reprimanded for officer DWI

Seven Houston law enforcement officers are in hot water after an investigation showed they helped cover up a fellow officer’s drunk driving accident. In April, a police sergeant crashed into an empty school bus on his way to work. The officer had bottles of wine and open beer cans in his car, but other officers at the scene claimed he was not drunk despite having a blood alcohol content of 0.176.

The sergeant has been fired from the Houston Police Department and at least two officers were suspended for one day without pay. The assistant chief was given a written reprimand. The bus driver was issued a ticket for failing to yield, which has since been dismissed.

Houston men charged with murder

A 35 year-old man and his brother are accused of murdering a 25 year-old man outside a Houston nightclub earlier this month. A witness claims the deceased had come to the nightclub intoxicated and provoked a fight with the brothers. The witness broke up the fight, but the man went outside again and got into another fight with them.

A second fight broke out between the two men, but this time the brothers had the 25 year-old on the ground and began to kick and beat him. Then, one of the brothers took out a gun and shot the man in the head. Law enforcement was able to identify the suspects by the witness’ positive photo identification and with surveillance tapes from a pawnshop next door.

Most Texans remarry after divorce

Posted on September 13th, 2011 No Comments

New statistics from the American Community Survey show that, while divorce is the highest in southern states, Texas and other southern states also see more people remarrying soon after a divorce. Compared to the Northeast, where people usually marry at an older age and have lower divorce rates, those who divorce are not as likely to remarry.

Data suggests that regional marriage cultures effect marriage rates after divorce. Since residents in the Northeast don’t remarry as often as residents in the South, second marriages in the South are shown to last longer than anywhere else in the country. In other regions, like the West coast, most couples live together rather than marry. So when an unmarried couple breaks up and moves out, it does not count into the Census Bureau’s or American Community Survey’s research.

Mel Gibson and ex end custody battle

Posted on September 7th, 2011 No Comments

Last week, actor Mel Gibson and his ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva ended their year-long child custody battle over their 2 year-old daughter. Grigorieva will be given $750,000 and will live rent-free with her daughter in the former couple’s home until she is 18 years-old. Gibson is also to start a trust for his daughter, which she can acquire once she is of legal age.

However, Grigorieva could lose some of the $750,000 and Gibson could face more penalties if they violate their agreement to never publicly discuss their relationship. Both also agreed that they must not write or contribute to articles or books about one another.
