Family sues camp for counselor’s sexual abuse

A Houston family has filed a lawsuit against Camp La Junta after their son was sexually abused by a camp counselor in the summer of 2009. According to the Houston Chronicle, the parents allege defamation and negligence by the camp and its owner.

The 23-year-old camp counselor has been sentenced and is currently serving a nine-year prison term on the charges of sexually assaulting a minor. According to the lawsuit, the then 11-year-old boy wrote to his parents about the abuse in a letter.

When the mother contacted the camp, the owner allegedly told her that her son was exaggerating and only homesick. The family says he still suffers from emotional distress.
