Former HPD sergeant sentenced on drug charges

A 47 year-old former Houston police officer was sentenced to more than 15 years in prison last week after being convicted of taking bribe money to traffic cocaine through Houston while in uniform. He was also charged with conspiracy to possess more than 5 kilograms of cocaine for distribution.

The officer had been a 19-year veteran of the force with only one year left before retirement when he was arrested last March. The FBI, Texas Rangers, and Houston police were in on the undercover operation that busted the sergeant.

A plea deal would have significantly lowered his sentencing to five or six years, but the former officer refused. He received the minimum sentencing, with the max being 19 years and seven months in prison.

A Pearland elementary school principal was arrested last week on charges of drug possession. According to court documents, Pearland police found glass pipes with methamphetamine residue, a bong, marijuana, syringes, and three Ecstasy pills in her home.

The principal called police in February, worried that her husband may hurt himself. After he was taken to the hospital, officers came by to collect firearms from the home in case he became suicidal. There they found drug paraphernalia in plain sight.

She told authorities that the drugs were not hers and that she was not aware her husband did drugs. She is currently on paid administrative leave and claims the drugs belong to her brother-in-law.
