Over $500,000 Donated to Arizona to Preserve Immigration Law

Since Tuesday, donations have been pouring in to the state of Arizona to help defend their recent change in immigration enforcement. Tuesday marks the day the  federal government sued the state, saying that immigration is a federal issue.

The Arizona law says that, in their enforcement of any law, police officers are expected to investigate an individual’s immigration status, provided they have “reasonable suspicion.”

Individuals across the fifty states donated on average between $10 and $100 to the cause, mainly via the internet. According to MSNBC, “The Associated Press examined about one fourth of the 9,057 contributions and found that just two of them were from businesses.”

Critics think the law encourages racial profiling, while supporters think it will force the federal government to focus on securing the nation’s borders.

Houston Man Deported, Could be U.S. Citizen Afterall

According to a report by the Houston Chronicle, 19-year-old Luis Alberto Delgado was deported last week after being pulled over by a Jim Wells County Sheriff Captain. Delgado and his brother were near Alice, Texas, when they were stopped because Delgado, the passenger, was not wearing a seat belt.

Delgado’s brother, Edward Luis Pompa’s, broken English and inability to produce a driver’s license made him an immediate suspect. The officer called border patrol to question Delgado while he took Pompa to county jail, where he was charged with driving without a license. Pompa made bail and was released after federal officials confirmed his citizenship.

Delgado was not as fortunate. Immigration officials claimed the U.S. Birth Certificate he possessed, proving his birth at Houston’s Ben Taub Hospital, was not his. The Social Security and Texas I.D. cards he also carried were of no use either. The Chronicle reports that, after being questioned for eight hours, Delgado signed papers he believed would allow him to be released from custody and return to his Houston home. Instead, the signed papers sent him to Matamoros. Barred from the U.S., Delgado currently remains stuck in the town of Reynosa, Mexico.

The Houston Chronicle writes that, “A spokesman for the Texas Department of State Health Services, Chris Van Deusen, confirmed that the state has a birth certificate on file matching the information on one provided to authorities by Delgado.”
