Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren finalize divorce

Posted on August 24th, 2010 No Comments

Tiger Woods and now ex-wife Elin Nordegren finalized their divorce on Monday, August 23, in Panama City’s Bay County Circuit Court in Florida.

Nodegren’s attorney documented grounds of an “irretrievably broken” marriage in response to the evidence that Tiger Woods had affairs with multiple women that has inundated the news media in recent months.

Although the terms of the divorce remain undisclosed, issues of custody, visitation, and finances are said to be settled.

The couple issued a joint statement following the divorce, asking that their privacy be respected and upheld as they “adjust to a new family situation.”

Celebrity divorces almost always end up being replayed over and over by the media, their problems made larger and the messiness a matter of public record. Avoid even a semblance of that by contacting the Conroe North Houston divorce lawyers of Garg & Associates by calling 281-210-0010 today.

The costs of divorces for both spouses

Posted on June 16th, 2010 No Comments

Going through a divorce may be expensive for both parties. Divorces often require both parties to hire lawyers and go through lengthy divorce proceedings or settlements.

In most cases, each party will be responsible for his or her legal fees. However, in some cases, divorce courts may allow either spouse to use community property to cover the legal expense.

What’s the purpose of temporary orders?

Posted on June 9th, 2010 No Comments

Finalizing a divorce may require a number of negotiations, court appearances, and other legal contingencies. For these reasons, divorces can take many months if not years to be finalized.

Because of the delay in finalizing divorces, courts have the power to issue temporary orders. These orders are designed to address certain issues and last until the divorce is finalized. Examples of temporary orders include alimony, child support, custody, and visitation of children.

Woman sues divorce attorney for incompetence

Posted on May 27th, 2010 No Comments

A Jeanette, PA, woman is claiming that her lawyer cost her approximately $122,000 due to his failure to freeze assets in her husband’s retirement fund.

The woman filed suit this Wednesday in Westmoreland County Court against her lawyer, alleging negligence and malpractice.

According to court documents, while the woman was involved in divorce proceedings with her husband, she informed her attorney that her husband had a Pennsylvania State Employees Retirement System account with $242,855 in retirement money.

The suit states that the lawyer “did not seek or otherwise obtain an injunction … or any other appropriate judicial intervention to prevent plaintiff’s husband … from removing the assets within his retirement account.”

The husband removed all the money from the account during the summer of 2008 and spent it “frivolously” for the next year before dying in August 2009. The cause of death is not explicated in the suit.

Study finds divorce more likely when housework not split

Posted on May 14th, 2010 No Comments

A recent academic study has found that marriages are much more likely to be stable when men contribute to housework, shopping, and childcare.

Wendy Sigle-Rushton, a senior lecturer at the London School of Economics, said: “The results suggest that the risk of divorce among working mothers, while greater, is substantially reduced when fathers contribute more to housework and childcare.”

“That men’s failure to contribute to housework can increase the risk of divorce may seem surprising, given that all of the families in my sample had fairly young children over the time period they are followed and a divorce would have had substantial economic consequences and would not have relieved most mothers of housework and childcare responsibilities,” she continued.

The risk of divorce in a situation where the woman returns to the workplace while her husband does not help in the housework increases 97 percent, according to the report.

“This study underscores the importance of taking into account relationships between’s men’s behaviour and marital stability. In economic and sociological research, there has been too great an emphasis on women’s paid work and not enough attention given to the division of unpaid work,” said Sigle-Rushton.

Chicago divorce ends in tragedy

Posted on May 4th, 2010 No Comments

A Chicago divorce between a 72-year-old man and his 68-year-old wife has ended in a tragic murder-suicide.

According to police, the divorce meant to end the couple’s rocky decades-old marriage had stalled over arguments about what to do with their apartment house at 1700 W. Erie St. in the city’s West Town neighborhood.

A court judge eventually ordered that the home be sold and the proceeds split between the two. When the couple’s adult sons, aged 44 and 42, served their father with a legal notice to leave the building, the 72-year-old man shot them both before turning the gun on himself.

The sons had assumed ownership of the property on their mother’s behalf and were seeking to sell it. When their father refused to exit the premises, they served him with an eviction, which is what led to the shooting.

Police Superintendent Jody Weis had some choice words for the “ambush style” killings of the two men.

“Their lives will never be the same due to this selfish and cowardly action of this murderer, who, after committing these crimes, turned his gun on himself rather than face justice,” Weis said.

Larry King files for eighth divorce

A spokesman for Larry King, the 75-year-old CNN broadcaster, announced today that King had filed for divorce from Shawn Southwick, his 50-year-old wife, with whom he has two children.

While King has been married to seven different women, this constitutes his eight divorce as he divorced, remarried, and re-divorced one of his former spouses. King is seeking joint-custody of his children with Southwick, while Southwick is seeking primary custody.

“His major concern is the welfare of his children and beyond that he’ll have no further comment about the divorce,” Howard Rubenstein, King’s spokesman, told Reuters.

Southwick filed her own divorce papers minutes after King did in Los Angeles. Both parties have cited irreconcilable differences.

Schools not adequately accommodating divorced families

Posted on April 12th, 2010 No Comments

Schools are not making enough of an effort to include non-residential parents of children with divorced parents, according to new research.

Over 20% of schoolchildren have divorced or separated parents, and studies have found that around two-thirds of non-residential parents, most often the father, do not receive any notifications, reports, or information from the schools their children attend.

Fathers interviewed for the study report feeling marginalized and unwelcome at school events. One child was told that he should only do homework at his mother’s home, so that it was more easily organized.

How to divide property in a divorce

Posted on April 2nd, 2010 No Comments

When a husband and wife consider filing for divorce, there are often issues regarding their property. The division of property in a divorce is somewhat dependent on state laws.

Because Texas is a community property state, the estate must be divided according to certain rules and regulations. Community property includes any assets or income that were acquired or accumulated during the marriage, while separate property includes assets and income from before the marriage.

If you are considering a divorce and have questions about how to divide your property, contact the Conroe property division lawyers of Garg & Associates, P.C., at 281-210-0010.
